The “Toronto Raptors” is a Canadian professional NBA team situated in Toronto, Ontario. The team is part of the Atlantic Division, which plays in the Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Originally, the team first played their home games at the Skydome (now the Rogers Centre), but later moved to Air Canada Centre (Raptors’ current home court) in the year 1999.
History of the ‘Raptors’
Together with the Vancouver Grizzlies, the team was founded in 1995 as part of the NBA’s expansion in Canada. In 2001, the Vancouver Grizzlies moved to Memphis, Tennessee and renamed itself as ‘Memphis Grizzlies, after their relocation, the Raptors became the only NBA team in Canada.
Toronto Raptors struggled during their early years of playing in the NBA, however, the team recovered after Vince Carter’s arrival. Vince Carter was drafted by the Raptors during the ‘draft day trade’ back in the year 1998. Since 1998, the team compiled a league attendance records and made their way to the NBA playoffs in the years 2000, 2001 and 2002. Adding to the team’s history of success were the winning record of 47 wins and their 2001 NBA playoff victory, after winning the 2001 NBA playoff, the team advanced to the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
After the Raptors’ consecutive success in the years 2000, 2001 and 2002. The team’s progress turned slower and Vince Carter was then drafted by the New Jersey Jets in the year 2004. Carter’s departure was immediately replaced by Chris Bosh.
In the 2006 to 2007 season, Chris Bosh and Bryan Collangelo (team’s President and General Manager) joined forces to regain strength from the previous drought. At that time, Andrea Barganni joined the Raptors being the first overall NBA draft pick. Since their restoration along with Barganni’s arrival, the team returned to the playoffs and won a total of 47 titles in the Atlantic Division of the NBA.
In 2013, under the new management of Masai Ujiri, Andrea Barganni was traded to the New York Knicks. Recently, the Raptors achieved their second Atlantic Division title during the 2013-2014 season.
