The “San Francisco Giants” is a professional American baseball team situated in San Francisco, California. The team is part of the West Division, which plays in the National League (NL) of the Major League Baseball (MLB Tickets).

Established in the year 1883, the San Francisco Giants were first named as the ‘Gothams’ under the ownership of the millionaire tobacconist John B. Day and amateur baseball player Jim Mutrie. At that time, the Gothams entered the National League (NL) and majority of their players were former members of the Troy Trojans.

After some time, the owners of the team Day and Mutrie started to draft players for Gothams and in the year 1888, the team achieved its first Pennant in the National League and won a World Series championship against the St. Louis Browns. The following year, the Gothams repeated as champions with a pennant and a World Series victory against the Brooklyn Bridegrooms.

The name ‘Giants’ was given in replacement to their old name Gothams after the team won one particular game against the Philadelphia Phillies, Mutrie who was one of the owners immediately ran to the dressing room after the game and shouted “My big fellows! Giants!”, from there, the team was officially known as the “Giants”. The game in between the Phillies and the Gothams was also considered as one of the team’s most satisfying games during their early years in the National League.

In the year 1958, the Gothams moved to San Francisco, California and became the San Francisco Giants. The team had compiled various outstanding records, including the 23 Pennants from the National League and their 20 consecutive appearances in the World Series championships. Among other teams in the Major League Baseball (MLB), the San Francisco Giants have always been looked up as threats against their rivalries.

The team’s most notable rivalries during their early years were the Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics and Philadelphia Phillies. In the early 2000s, the team had new rival teams, including the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals, the Cardinals are recently the hottest rivalry of the Giants. The longest-standing and the biggest rivalry of the team is the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In the National League history, the San Francisco Giants are one of the longest-running professional teams with the most numbers of victories in the American baseball and North American professional sports history. One of the team’s most recognized victories was during their 8th World Series championship, where they finished on the second place next to the St. Louis Cardinals. In the overall ranking, the Giants finished in the fourth place, next to the Oakland Athletics, St. Louis Cardinals and New York Yankees.

Most players of the San Francisco Giants had been inducted in the Hall of Fame of the professional baseball. In the 2014 World Series Championship, the team won against the Kansas City Royals in 4 games. In the recent times, the Giants has remained to be one of the most prominent teams in the history of professional sports.
