The Montreal Impact is a professional Canadian soccer team situated in Montreal, Quebec. The club competes in Major League Soccer (MLS) and is the 19th franchise in the league, under the ownership of the Saputo Family.

Prior to the formal launching of the Montreal Impact on November 22, 2010, a lot of speculations had been out regarding the possibility of a new Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise in the year 2007. Along with construction of Saputo Stadium at that time, the interest about putting up another franchise to be placed in Montreal became certain.

On July 24, 2008, the Major League Soccer (MLS) aired to the public that they had been looking for two more expansion teams to play for the 2011 season. Luckily, one of the league’s long-listed potential candidates were the Montreal.

The bidding for an MLS franchise began on November 22, 2008, the bidding was continued by commissioner Don Garber. On May 7, 2010, it was finally announced that Montreal would be the 19th club in the MLS to play for the 2012 game season.

Commissioner Don Garber and club owner Saputo announced on June 14, 2011 that Montreal Impact had agreed a five-year contract with the Bank of Montreal to become the club’s major sponsors of jerseys in the Major League Soccer (MLS).

On the 30th and 31st of July 2011, the Red Bulls had played in the 2011 Emirates Cup held in London, leading the club to a victory against the Paris Saint German with a winning score of 1-0. In the history of the Major League Soccer (MLS), the New York Red Bulls were the first club to participate and the third team to have won the Emirates Cup in London, next to the Hamburger SV and Arsenal FC.

The club had its first MLS appearance on March 10, 2012 against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC with a losing record of 2-0. Although their first game was a disappointment, the Montreal Impact quickly responded with a good fight against the Chicago Fire, a week after their first game.

Under head coach Hans Backe, the Red Bulls advanced to the MLS Cup playoffs during the last quarter of 2012 and finished the season being the third placer of the Eastern Conference Division. However, their success was cut short after losing their home leg against the D.C United in the following season, with a losing record of 1-0. A few hours after the defeat, the club announced that Hans Backe’s contract was not renewed. While sighting for Hans Backe’s best replacement at that time, Mike Petke, who was the club’s most capped player, was set as a temporary replacement for Backe.

Hans Backe was replaced by the club’s full-time head coach Mike Petke in the year 2012. Petke’s first season started with a draw match against the Portland Timbers on March 3, 2013, with a finished record of 3-3.

The Red Bulls qualified for the 2014 Major League Soccer (MLS), defeating the Sporting Kansas City during the knockout rounds of playoffs. The club has reached the next round facing the DC United and has made it until the Eastern Conference MLS finals against the New England Revolution.
