The “Carolina Hurricanes” is a professional ice hockey team situated in Raleigh, North Carolina. The team is part of the Metropolitan Division that plays in the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The state of North Carolina has a total of three franchises namely the Carolina Hurricanes, the Carolina Panthers and the Charlotte Hornets. The team usually plays their home games at the PNC Arena with a carrier of 18,680 seats and the Hurricanes is the only major professional sports team to play in Raleigh, North Carolina.

In the year 1971, the Carolina Hurricanes were officially formed as the New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association (WHA), after 8 years, the team joined the NHL during the NHL-WHA merger as the Hartford Whalers. The team successfully won their first Stanley Cup against the Edmonton Oilers during the 2005-2006 season after they moved to Carolina in the year 1997.

The history of Carolina Hurricane’s Franchise in 1971

The team (formerly known as the New England Whalers) has finally joined the WHA in 1971 after being awarded a franchise and being invited to play in Boston, Massachusetts. In their early years, the team was having a hard time playing at Boston Garden and the franchise owners decided to transfer to Hartford, Connecticut after 4 years.

For the record, the team appeared to be a little unsuccessful in their career as NHL players compared to the times when they were still playing for the WHA, in fact, they only had 3 winnings recorded in the NHL. The team has continued to play despite their struggles in winning seasons, however, after reaching the playoffs for the final time, they were beaten during the first rounds in seven times by the Canadiens.

As years grow, the team has shown progress as they were also able to get awards and trophies in late 2000s, even for a fact that failures have been existing through years of playing in the NHL. On March 25, 2013, the Carolina Hurricanes agreed a deal amounting to $35 million with Alexander Semin.

Bill Peters is the current head coach of the team since June 19, 2014.
